Mountain Biking in Utah

Best Biking Areas Throughout Utah

From the famed Slickrock Trail in Moab to the Mirror Lake National Scenic Byway in the Uinta Mountains, Utah’s biking trails are renowned, and often unmatched.

Enjoy well-known mountain biking and road cycling opportunities throughout the Beehive State, we’ll just tell you where to get started.

Moab & Southeastern Utah

One of the most popular mountain biking trails in Utah, the Slickrock Trail is set near Moab in the southeastern part of the state. Moab is already known for its scenic surroundings and proximity to Utah National Parks, and the Slickrock Trail lets riders immerse themselves right in the beauty of Moab.

Slickrock Trail in Moab

Part of the Sand Flats Recreation Area, the Slickrock mountain biking trail yields incredible views of the Colorado River during your trek down 13 miles of smooth sandstone (hence the name).

Also in the Moab area is the Upper Colorado Scenic Byway along State Route 128, connecting Arches National Park to town. You can do the whole 44 miles, or the 15 mile stretch to La Sal Loop Road. And don't forget the Moab Mountain Bike Festival.

Other mountain biking opportunities near Moab include the 14-mile Porcupine Rim and the 27-mile Whole Enchilada trail, plus Pipe Dream, Hidden Valley, Amasa Back, Magnificent 7, and HyMasa/Captain Ahab.

SLC & Northern Utah

Utah’s snowy yet scenic northern region contains some of the country’s best mountain and road biking trails. First, check out Draper for the Rush Trail in Corner Canyon, or the Draper Bike Park.

Mirror Lake National Scenic Byway

From Salt Lake City, you can hit the six-mile City Creek Canyon trail, or the 36 mile Saltair trail leading you past the North Temple and the Salt Lake City International Airport, and straight for the Great Salt Lake.

You can also connect with the scenic singletrack Wasatch Crest Trail through the Wasatch Mountains, leading you straight to Park City. Or if you’re already in Park City, check out the 22-mile Mid-Mountain Trail – awarded the International Mountain Biking Association Gold-level Ride Center certification – or the paved Alpine Loop Scenic Byway.

North of SLC, head to Ogden for the Wheeler Creek trail and the Maples Trail, moving you toward the Coldwater Overlook. Stick around northern Utah for the 40-mile Logan Canyon trek (30 miles slightly uphill until you reach beautiful Bear Lake, then a 10-mile downhill jaunt the rest of the way).

In the gorgeous Uinta Mountains, enjoy pedaling 56-miles of the unmatched Mirror Lake National Scenic Byway.

St. George & Southern Utah

Biking in Zion National Park

Another well-known mountain biking trail in southern Utah is Gooseberry Mesa – a network of nine trails nearing 18 total miles near the town of Hurricane (pronounced the way Gregory Peck would say it), and nearing the glorious Zion National Park.

Altogether, the Hurricane Cliffs Trail System features some excellent slickrock riding near the city of St. George in southwestern Utah.

The Panguitch area near Bryce Canyon National Park yields plenty of scenic rides for both mountain and road riders. Enjoy the 16-mile (depending on whether you want to do the whole thing), singletrack path known as the Thunder Mountain Trail in the beautiful Red Canyon.

And if it’s pavement you seek, consider the 124-mile (again, if you do the whole road), Scenic Byway 12, or try the eight-mile Red Canyon Paved Bike Trail – also starting at Thunder Mountain Trailhead.
