Get Outdoors in Moab and Central Utah | Late-Summer 2014
With 50th Anniversary Celebrations going on all summer long, Canyonlands National Park serves as an even bigger draw to central Utah and the community of Moab. The Museum of Moab hosts a range of free events and exhibits in conjunction with the celebrations, including the Annual Quilt Challenge and the special Canyonlands collection. The Moab Music Festival also promises free live music at Swanny Park at 2 p.m. on September 1st.
Touted as the main event of the Canyonlands National Park 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Historic Canyonlands Film Festival is held at Star Hall on September 11th and 13th, and the official Commemorative Ceremony is Friday, September 12th, featuring guest speakers, a cowboy dinner, and campfire interpretive talks.
Riders congregate in downtown Moab for the 2014 Utah State H.O.G. Rally, August 28th through 30th. The Moab area’s gorgeous red rock scenery and proximity to Canyonlands, Arches National Park, and the cool waters of the Colorado River make it one of the most enticing environments for a summer ride. Rally events include a bike show, bike games, and even river rafting.
It’s fair season in central Utah and Beaver welcomes residents and visitors to the 2014 Beaver County Fair, August 14th through 16th. The Beaver County Fairgrounds fill with 4-H livestock exhibitions, rodeo action, a demolition derby, and, of course, midway rides and games. Still, the fun doesn’t end there – the fairgrounds continue to host more family-friendly fun throughout the month. Don’t miss the Midway West Carnival, featuring a fishing pond, Water Walkers demonstrations, and free ice cream, August 21st through 23rd.
This is also the season for a paradisiacal retreat into Fishlake National Forest, and the communities of Richfield and Fillmore are beset on either side of the forest, providing quick access to a vast array of activities. Right now the conditions are primed for elk hunting and you can fish for mackinaw and rainbow trout by boat or on the shore. The surrounding landscape is ideal for mountain biking and hiking, and the Paiute ATV trail traverses almost 1,000 miles of scenic Fishlake National Forest terrain. Don’t miss a chance to experience an unforgettable getaway before the cold weather returns.
