Visiting SLC & Northern Utah

As northern Utah’s back to school season passes and summer's blaze bows to fall, football season begins. Weber State University Wildcats football draws Ogden fans out, while in Logan the Utah State University Aggies are the pride of Cache County. New Pac 10 members, the Utes of the University of Utah, fill Rice Eccles Stadium, site of the 2002 Winter Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. Nothing is bigger on a fall Saturday in Provo than a home game at Lavell Edwards Stadium with Brigham Young University’s Cougars. Football, nice fall weather and great destinations - this is the season for a getaway in northern Utah.

The stands at Sandy’s Rio Tinto Stadium are filled with MLS Real Salt Lake soccer fans. The popular RSL makes their home in Sandy to the delight of fans in the Salt Lake Metro Area. Rio Tinto Stadium is 15 miles south of downtown Salt Lake City, and just east of Interstate 15, making a Real Salt Lake soccer game convenient for fans. The 2012 season runs through October 27ths last home game.

Right on the tails of Real Salt Lake's season, the NBA Utah Jazz take the court in downtown Salt Lake City at Energy Solutions Arena. The first game of the season is October 31st, at home. Cheer on the Utah Jazz fall through spring. The Utah Transit Authority Trax system includes the Arena Stop, directly in front of Energy Solutions Arena – travel to Jazz games is easy and convenient.

North of Salt Lake City 85 miles is the northern Utah city of Logan. The cultural and commercial hub of Cache Valley, Logan is ideal for a fall getaway. A drive along US-89 from Logan to Garden City in fall colors is spectacular. The Logan Canyon Scenic Byway cuts through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, ending at the turquoise waters of Bear Lake. Warm fall days are ideal for last of season hiking, mountain biking and fishing, and if winter comes early pull out the ski’s and snowmobiles.

Runners looking for a challenge - the 2012 Bear 100 is September 28th and 29th. Described as a cool, autumn loop through the pines of the Wasatch Bear River Range, underplays the rigor of the 100-mile course and 21,986 feet of climb during the race. The Bear 100 starts in Logan and the course takes runners through the Wasatch–Cache/Uinta National Forest to the finish in Idaho. Fall's golden aspens and red maples offer runners scenic views throughout the race.

Although end of summer and fall in Salt Lake City and northern Utah can be beautiful, before you know it, the holiday lights on the LDS Temple Square are shimmering, welcoming throngs of visitors to downtown. With the recent opening of the City Creek Center just across the street, the 2012 holiday season is prime for shopping and festivities. Don’t miss a visit to downtown SLC for the holidays.
