Visiting SLC & Northern Utah
Roosevelt, Ballard and Vernal in northeastern Utah are the gateway communities to Utah’s Dinosaurland. Dinosaur National Monument straddles the Utah state line, with the Quarry Visitor Center and Quarry Exhibit Hall located 20 miles east of Vernal. Travelers be sure to plan for a visit to the Quarry Exhibit Hall where you actually see dinosaur fossils. Utah’s Wasatch front communities are likely destinations for Utah travelers. From Logan in the north, home of Utah State University, through Odgen and Layton to the greater Salt Lake City, expect exceptional spring skiing and boarding at northern Utah’s ski and snowboarding resorts – take advantage before spring and summer warm weather sets in.
South of Salt Lake City, Wasatch front communities blend together including, Midvale, Sandy, Lehi, Provo and Springville. With the recent opening of UTA’s Front Runner commuter rail service spanning Ogden to Provo, and links to the Salt Lake City TRAX, traveling by car is optional. With the expansion of Interstate 15 through Salt Lake and Utah counties, traffic in northern Utah is rarely an issue.
The University of Utah in Salt Lake City and Brigham Young University have full calendars of athletic and cultural events for travelers to northern Utah, enhancing an already exciting 2013 spring and summer calendar of events. Aprils Salt Lake City Marathon, Provo’s July 4th Freedom Fest, and the Little Cottonwood Half Marathon are among the seasons best.
When the warm weather hits Vernal, Steinaker State Park makes a great stop for outdoor recreation. Fishing for trout and bass, boating, swimming and water recreation abound – Steinaker is seven miles north of Vernal and is home to the areas most popular beach.
Early July travelers, plan your trip to include the 2013 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo on your itinerary. Held July 11th through the 13th, events include evening pre-shows, barrel racing Sunday morning, and the evening rodeo events. Join the fun of a traditional rodeo at Vernal’s Western Park.
June in Vernal brings the opening of the Outlaw Trail Theater. The 2013 season runs from June 24th through the July 6th. Pick up thickets at the Western Heritage Museum for the outdoor performances held at the Amphitheater at Western Park. Visit Vernal in July for the Uintah County Fair. The ten-day fair is also held at the Western Park Convention Center.
