Visiting SLC & Northern Utah
Summer sunshine means the weather's right for outdoor events, festivals, and countless activities in Salt Lake City and throughout northern Utah. This season, visitors won't have much trouble finding fun in the Crossroads of the West.
To SLC sports fans, summertime means baseball. Utah may not have an MLB team of its own, but that doesn't mean visitors can't enjoy a day at the ballgame in the Salt Lake area. The future big-leaguers of the Ogden Raptors go to bat at Lindquist Field in Ogden, the Salt Lake Bees swing for the fences at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City, and the Orem Owlz round the bases at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem, near Interstate 15 between Lehi and Springville. Check the schedule during your northern Utah visit – the MiLB season goes through the end of August.
Salt Lake City celebrates its burgeoning art scene with the 2015 Urban Arts Festival on July 18th. Held in the Gateway District, the free event features the works of over 100 artists, three stages of live music, skateboarding demonstrations, a variety of workshops and more.
The same spirit thrives at the 2015 Vans Warped Tour on August 1st. A staple of the alternative music scene for over 20 years, the Vans Warped Tour brings its traveling "punk rock summer camp" to the Utah State Fair Park in SLC, and with it come more than 50 bands, extreme sports shows, and more. Bring plenty of water – the full day of fun starts at 11 a.m. and the music rages on until sundown.
For music fans on the opposite side of the spectrum, there's always Taylor Swift. The seven-time Grammy Award winning country/pop sensation performs hits from her album "1989" at the EnergySolutions Arena in SLC on September 4th.
Logan visitors can embrace the same sense of freedom summer break provides for Utah State University students by embarking on a Wind Caves hike. Just 10 minutes east of Logan via U.S. Highway 89, the steep, two-mile trail provides excellent views of Logan Canyon along the way, and the destination is well worth the work.
To the far east, adventurous summer travelers encounter all kinds of excitement in and around Vernal. Rafting expeditions down the Green River, scenic drives along the Sheep Creek Geological Loop, ancient dinosaur tracks in plain view at Red Fleet State Park – Vernal's surroundings are an outdoor enthusiast's dream. And for history buffs and budding young scientists, there's the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum, a 22,000 square-foot facility focusing on anthropology, geology, and natural history.
