Visiting SLC & Northern Utah
Summer shines bright over the City of the Saints. Ski season might be a ways off, but outdoor fun abounds. The options are endless – everything from swimming, boating, or birdwatching in parks like Great Salt Lake State Park to hiking and biking trails like Donut Falls at Big Cottonwood Canyon. Even better, Salt Lake City and surrounding communities like Ogden and Park City are gearing up for all sorts of special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities.
Utah may not have an MLB team of its own, but summer visitors to the SLC area can still enjoy America’s Pastime. The future big-leaguers of the Ogden Raptors go to bat at Lindquist Field in Ogden, the Salt Lake Bees swing for the fences at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City, and the Orem Owlz round the bases at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem, near Interstate 15 between Lehi and Springville. Check the schedule during your northern Utah visit – the MiLB season goes through the first week of September.
SLC punks look forward to another “punk rock summer camp” on July 30th. That’s when the 2016 Vans Warped Tour pulls into town, bringing with it a host of aggressive alternative rock, punk, hardcore, and emo bands. The Utah State Fair Park hosts the fun, and fans are urged to bring plenty of water – the music kicks in at 11 a.m. and goes until sundown.
The Mouth of Ogden Canyon at the Rainbow Gardens Centers hosts the 2016 Odgen Canyon River Festival, August 5th through 7th. It’s a chance to find a sense of local life through three days of ive entertainment, kids' activities, great local food vendors, and tons of outdoor recreation.
Music is in the air over Sandy this summer – and on August 17th, it’s some pretty roots stuff. Local and regional folk music acts will perform at the Sandy Amphitheater, starting at 8 p.m., as part of the 2016 International Folk Festival. Bring the family and come hear a range of sounds spanning centuries of influence.
Visitors to Logan can embark on a Wind Caves hike this summer. Located 10 minutes east of Logan via U.S. Highway 89, a steep, two-mile trail provides excellent views of Logan Canyon along the way, and the destination is well worth the work.
Further east, adventurers are in for all kinds of excitement in and around Vernal. Vernal's surroundings are an outdoor enthusiast's dream, offering visitors everything from rafting expeditions down the Green River to beautiful drives along the Sheep Creek Geological Loop and the chance to view dinosaur tracks at Red Fleet State Park. And for history buffs and budding young scientists, there's the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum.
