Visiting St. George & Southern Utah

Winter weather doesn’t put a stop to outdoor fun in southern Utah. Parks like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park are as beautiful and inviting as ever and the coming snow only opens up more opportunities for cold-weather activities. On top of that, communities from Beaver to Bryce Canyon City to St. George all host enough special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun to insist now’s the time to plan your visit.

Southern Utah may not be as well known as a skiing destination as the northern region, but Cedar City is actually situated near some of the highest base elevations in the state. It’s also just 40 minutes away from Brian Head Ski Resort, where skiers have their choice of 71 runs across more than 650 skiable acres.

South along Interstate 15 in Beaver, the holiday season gets its official start on December 4th and 5th, when the 2016 Beaver Holiday Open House sees downtown merchants open up to offer special deals, refreshments, and treats. Browse the unique assortment of shops and boutiques and stick around for the light parade on Saturday evening – it starts making its way through the downtown area at 6 p.m.

Kanab visitors have the chance to catch one of Symphony of the Canyons’ final shows of 2015 on December 4th and 5th. For two nights, the 40-piece orchestra will perform the Nutcracker with the help of the Red Rock Dancers at Kanab Middle School. The music starts at 6:30 p.m.

St. George visitors can experience Christmas the way it was in 19th-century London by being a part of the 2015 Dickens Christmas Festival. From December 2nd through 5th, the Dixie Convention Center is transformed into “Olde London Towne,” drawing thousands of visitors with vendors, food offerings, live music, and nightly performances of "Scrooge" and "Oliver."

Celebrate the first day of a brand new year at the George Street Fest on Main. Part of the downtown historic district’s monthly first Friday series, the Streetfest features a street concert, buskers, the Zion Brewing Company Jazz Garden, and products for sale by local artists, farmers, and merchants – all starting at 6 p.m.

January 14th through 18th, St. George visitors are invited to experience southern Utah’s breathtaking, mountainous countryside through the eyes of local and regional artists by embarking on a self-guided “Arts to Zion” Art & Studio Tour. Start at the Main Street Theater Building for maps and information and celebrate the art southern Utah inspires. Tours open at 10 a.m. each day.
