Visiting St. George & Southern Utah

Summer - spectacular southern Utah is alive. St. George, southern Utah’s largest community, is a gateway to Zion National Park, as well as home to ten of Utah’s best golf courses. From traditional events like the Washington County Fair and the Dixie Lions Round-Up Rodeo, to summer outdoor movies at the St. George Town Square, this is the season for a southern Utah getaway. Theater fans flock to St. George for performances at Tuachan Amphitheatre, 10-miles north of the city in Ivins. See Disney’s Aladdin, and award winning Hairspray through summer, or check for special events including Huey Lewis and the News in concert.

Runners visiting Bryce Canyon National Park and Bryce Canyon City, don’t miss the 2012 Bryce Canyon Half Marathon and Bryce Canyon Rim Run and Walk. The Bryce Canyon Half Marathon is July 14th, and also includes a 5K run. The point-to-point race begins near Bryce Canyon City and finishes in Cannonville Town Park. Some good news, the course features an elevation drop of over 1,500 feet as racers descend down Bryce Canyon National Park.

Races don’t get more scenic than the August 25th Rim Run, with a 5-mile course lined with Ponderosa pines and spectacular views of Bryce Canyon. Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rim Run, after the finish with a cowboy lunch and entry to the Bryce Country Rodeo. Ruby’s Inn, a mainstay of Bryce Canyon, hosts the Bryce Canyon Country Rodeo Wednesdays through Saturdays through the end of August. For the adventurous, adults can try their luck at Steer Riding and the kids can try Sheep Riding.

This is the season for the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City. The 2012 season features Les Miserables through October, at the Randall L. Jones Theatre along with Hamlet, beginning in September. The Adams Shakespearean Theatre hosts performances of The Merry Wives of Windsor, Mary Stuart and Titus Andronicus.

Cycling enthusiasts close your summer Labor Day weekend in Cedar City at GRUB Fest. This cycling weekend includes everything a rider could want, including racing, both road and mountain bike, and pick either on or off road courses. There is plenty of recreational riding with over 300 miles of road, along with 100 miles of single and double track.

Runners set your training for the 2012 Red Rock Relay Zion. The fourth annual running of the event is September 7th and 8th, featuring a challenging adventure covering some the world’s most scenic countryside. This two-day race begins outside Cedar City at Brian Head Ski Resort and travels through the Dixie National Forest, Cedar Breaks and Snow Canyon, to the city of St. George.
