Visiting St. George & Southern Utah

Experience the magic of winter in Southern Utah. Snow fall dusts the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon and the red rock country surrounding St. George, while it powders the slopes of Brian Head Ski Resort and Cedar Breaks National Monument. One of Southern Utah’s best kept secrets, discover the scenic beauty of winter in Bryce Canyon - activities range from a snowshoe hike and cross-country skiing along canyon rim trails, to tubing and sledding. Further south with more temperate winter weather, the communities of St. George, Kanab and Springdale, offer golfers extended seasons among spectacular vistas.

Bryce Canyon is a sanctuary of natural darkness and winter’s cold, dry air makes stargazing spectacular. The Bryce Canyon astronomy winter program offers stargazing Saturday nights at 7pm. The stargazing continues through the second Saturday in March. Dress warm, and check in at the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center for a wonderful evening under the stars.

The Best Western Plus Ruby’s Inn hosts the 2013 Bryce Canyon Winter Festival February 16th through the 18th. A great President’s Day weekend family event, enjoy snowshoe tours and races, snow sculpting and cross-country ski tours. There is even a kayak demonstration at the indoor pool at Ruby’s Inn. Discover the beauty and fun of southern Utah in winter at the Bryce Canyon Winter Festival.

Cedar City, Iron County’s largest community, sits off Interstate 15 and is home to Southern Utah University. Considered a desert location by some, Cedar City is also a gateway to Utah’s highest elevation alpine resort. Enjoy excellent skiing and snowboarding at Brian Head Ski Resort featuring two mountains, 53 trails and an average of over 425 inches of the world’s greatest snow. Brian Head also features a family Snow Tube Park, making for a full range of fun for all ages and abilities.

Winter events abound at Brian Head Resort. January 11th is the 2013 Beach Party Night at Brian Head, February brings the Poker Run and Mardi Gras Costume Downhill Parade on Brian Head’s slopes, with the Easter Carnival at Navajo Lodge on March 30th & 31st. Thirty miles down the mountain in Cedar City, visitors enjoy a full calendar of sports and events at SUU. Men’s and Women’s SUU Thunderbirds basketball draws residents and visitors to the Centrum Arena to cheer on their favorites.

Far southern Utah is home to Utah’s Dixie and the community of St. George. The temperate winter climate makes Saint George a popular winter destination and retirement community. Winter travelers enjoy cool weather and crowd-free visits to Springdale and Zion National Park, 40 miles east of St. George. Further east along Utah Highway 89, communities of Mount Carmel and Kanab also extend the golf season and offer small town Utah hospitality.
