Visiting St. George & Southern Utah

Saint George, near the southern Utah state line, with the motto “where the summer sun spends winter” is Utah’s winter escape destination. Home of Dixie State University and an ever-increasing retiree population, St. George is a thriving southern Utah community. Stop by Swig – the latest hotspot for a soft drink and sugar cookie to keep you cool and refueled.

It’s the season in St. George for the Southwest Symphony Orchestra. Held at the Cox Performing Arts Center on the Dixie State University Campus, 2014 performances begin February 7th with Pomp and Pizzazz. Then the Youth Concerto Classic is on Friday, March 28th.

The Dixie State Celebrity Concert Series also performs at the Cox Performing Arts Center. The 2014 calendar features the River City Brass Band on February 24th, with the BYU Men’s Chorus on March 7th and 8th.

Southern Utah is just a portion of the Southwest’s Grand Circle, which encompasses regions of the four corners states. Zion National Park, with the community of Springdale at its entrance, is the Grand Dame of Utah’s National Parks.

No less captivating and beautiful are Bryce Canyon National Park, east of Highway 89, and Capitol Reef National Park to the north, east of Teasdale and Torrey. Keep a check on winter weather, but the cold season visit rewards visitors with fewer crowds, cool weather and the same incredible scenery.

The community of Kanab is a gateway to Lake Powell, which straddles the southern Utah state line and the beauty of Kane County. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park west of Kanab is a haven for ATV riders, and scenic Kodachrome Basin State Park is another hidden gem, well worth a visit for a late winter hike. Visitors to Kanab, take time to stop at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary north of town to visit the nations largest no-kill animal sanctuary.

Cedar City residents and students at Southern Utah University have a short 45-minute drive in the Dixie National Forest to take advantage of skiing and snowboarding at Brian Head Resort. With 2014 season night skiing Thursday through Saturday, there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy Utah’s Greatest Snow on Earth at America’s highest elevation resort.
