Visiting St. George & Southern Utah

Southern Utah is hot, and it’s not the weather. St George, near the Southern Utah state line, hosts an early-season challenge for athletes, and it’s a big one. Ironman 70.3 St. George 2014 comes to scenic Washington County May 3rd. Sand Hollow Reservoir hosts the swim, while the bike and run courses include surrounding Snow Canyon and the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve offering athletes spectacular views of downtown St. George.

Runners, the Top of Zion Relay Adventure is your challenge. Another southern Utah extreme challenge, Top of Zion features a 195-mile course run by a team of 12 over a 24 to 36 hour time frame. The 2014 relay is May 30th and 31st taking teams from Capitol Reef National Park to Zion National Park.

The Southern Utah challenges continue in June with the 2014 Rockwell Relay. The Rockwell cycling relay begins at Swanny Park in Moab on June 13th, and finishes 527 miles away in St. George at Town Square Park. Gather a team of four and cycle your way through two of Utah’s National Parks along the course.

The spectacularly scenic course passes through Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, as well as parts of the magnificent Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. There is no better way to experience scenic southern Utah.

A stop in Bryce Canyon City is a must for visitors to Bryce Canyon National Park, and put the Bryce Canyon Country Rodeo on the top of the itinerary. The 2014 season opens May 24th, with rodeos held four nights a week, Wednesday through Saturday. Look for the Jackpot rodeos on July 4th and July 26th, which are the largest of the season. Be sure to use the free Bryce Canyon Shuttle for convenient transportation to the park.

Travelers along Highway 89 from Kanab north to Mt. Carmel Junction are intrigued by Moqui Cave, five miles north of Kanab on the east side of the road. Stop and satisfy your curiosity, and you will find a collection of dinosaur tracks, and one of the country’s largest fluorescent and fossil mineral displays.
