Outdoor Fun for Southern Utah Visitors | Late-Summer 2014

Southern Utah’s unique landscape makes it an outdoor adventurer’s dream destination. Communities throughout the region are ready to serve as the perfect base camp for an unforgettable exploration through some of the most breathtaking natural geological wonders in the world – from Bryce Canyon National Park and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, near Bryce Canyon City, to Cedar Breaks National Monument, near Cedar City.

Springdale is tucked into the southern end of Zion National Park, giving residents and visitors quick access to one-of-kind hiking, rock climbing, and horseback riding experiences through the 15-mile-long Zion Canyon and special geological features like the Subway, a scenic slot canyon. Plan a visit to Springdale – or Mount Carmel, just over 20 miles east – in September or October to enjoy pleasant, 80-degree average highs throughout the park.

Families are heading to St. George to tour the Dixie State University campus before the fall semester starts on August 25th, but those with little ones along for the ride won’t want to miss the Little Mermaid at Tuacahn Amphitheatre. Running now through October 18th, the production is a live-action, stage interpretation of the classic Disney animated film.

Excitement is mounting for the 80th Annual St. George Lions Dixie Round-Up Rodeo. With all proceeds set to go back into the local community, the 2014 installment of this St. George staple features fun for cowboys and cowgirls big and small, from mutton bustin’ for the little cowpokes to bull riding for the big guys. Things get started at the historic Sun Bowl at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 11th and go through Saturday, the 13th.

Kenab celebrates the spirit of the Old West, August 21st through 23rd, when the 2014 Western Legends Roundup takes over the town. Called “Little Hollywood,” the Kenab area has been the shooting location for more than 100 movies and TV shows, and the Western Legends Roundup gives fans an opportunity to meet a few of the stars, enjoy a street fair on Main Street, dance to live music, and witness gunfight reenactments with shooters in period dress.
