Visiting St. George & Southern Utah
Though northern Utah is renowned the world over for its skiing, Cedar City, less than 45 miles from the state’s southern border, is situated just minutes from some of the highest base elevations in the state. Just 40 minutes outside of town, Brian Head Resort boasts 71 runs, with eight chairlifts, for a total of over 650 skiable acres – and the snow is expected to last through much of March.
Cedar City enjoys nickname “Festival City, USA” and visitors and residents are never left with a shortage of things to do. Get a slice of Americana at the 2015 Cedar City Soapbox Challenge on May 9th. Kids and adults come together to engineer their fastest soapbox cars before putting them to the test in a gravity-powered race down Main Street in downtown Cedar City.
To the northeast, Bryce Canyon City is a year-round destination, yielding convenient access to Bryce Canyon National Park and a wealth of adventurous activities. Enjoy this season’s cool breezes and mild temperatures on a hike through the park, where you’ll an abundance of towering spires – known as hoodoos – and a stunning natural amphitheater.
Situated along Utah State Route 9, La Verkin and Mount Carmel make ideal base camps for a Zion National Park exploration – and this season is a great time to explore. Spring’s blooms paint Zion’s gorgeous red rocks with an even wider array of colors to create a breathtaking backdrop for rock climbing, horseback riding, and hiking on the park’s countless trails.
Athletes from all over the country come to St. George to compete in the IRONMAN 70.3 North American Pro Championship on May 2nd. Better start training early – the run and bike courses are some of the most challenging in the IRONMAN circuit, and the top 30 participants will qualify for the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
St. George sees more athletes gathering for another fun and unique way to work out on the evening of May 22nd. St. George Municipal Airport hosts the 2015 Midnight 5K, which sends runners racing down the airport runway, providing extraordinary views of the twinkling town. The festivities will include rocking music, glow sticks, awards, and giveaways, all starting at 5 p.m.
