Visiting St. George & Southern Utah

It’s high season in Southern Utah, popular destinations like Zion National Park, Capital Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park see a steady stream of visitors. Explorers venture into the wilds of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, dust trails behind off-road vehicles at Coral Pink Sand Dunes and water sport enthusiasts are churning up 185 miles of water at Lake Powell. Southern Utah is filled with natural wonders, adventure and great destinations for a summer getaway. Tuacahn Amphitheatre, north of St George is alive with summer’s outdoor theater, Cedar City’s Utah Shakespeare Festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Southern Utah has something for everyone this summer.

Springdale, the Gateway to Zion National Park, is located at the southern entrance to the park. Don’t miss a 2011 summer concert surrounded by the cliffs of Zion National Park at the stunning Tanner amphitheater in Springdale. The 3rd Annual Springdale Rock Festival plays at the Tanner July 23rd. Catch performances by Southern Cross Roads, Eric Dodge and Band, the Red Desert Ramblers and more through September 2nd.

Stick around Springdale to enjoy restaurants like Parallel Eighty-Eight or Whiptail Grill – both wonderful finds for a small town. Stop at the Switchback Grill and Trading Company for the breakfast buffet and souvenir shopping. Check out the photography at David J West Gallery or David Petit Photography and Gallery. For Native American jewelry and artifacts don’t miss browsing through Tribal Arts on Zion Park Boulevard.

Outdoor theater on a beautiful summer night – Tuachan is the place. The 2011 season brings The Little Mermaid and Grease to life on stage. Ideal for families and groups, performances alternate nights through the summer and fall. Enjoy Broadway in this spectacular desert setting at the base of Padre Canyon, less than 10 miles north of St George.

The Utah Shakespeare Festival is another Southern Utah summer entertainment staple. Celebrating its 50th year, the festival showcases performances in three venues in the heart of Cedar City. The Adams Shakespearean Theatre, Randall L Jones Theatre and Auditorium Theatre are located off Center Street / University Boulevard near each other. Be sure to check the schedule for special anniversary events including the Festival Anniversary Tour, Augusts Beach Party and the 2nd Annual Bardway Baby concert.

The southern Utah towns of Kanab, Springdale and St George host DOCUTAH, Southern Utah’s International Documentary Film Festival. After last year's debut festival, DOCUTAH 2011 runs for 10 days, screening independent films in venues across Kane County and Washington County. The festival opens September 8th with a documentary film and live performance by legendary Wayne Newton.
